How many lives can one cat touch? How is it possible for an abandoned kitten to transform a small library, save a classic American town, and eventually become famous around the world? You can't even begin to answer those questions until you hear the charming story of Dewey Readmore Books, the beloved library cat of Spencer, Iowa.
Dewey's story starts in the worst possible way. Only a few weeks old, on the coldest night of the year, he was stuffed into the returned book slot at the Spencer Public Library. He was found the next morning by library director, Vicki Myron, a single mother who had survived the loss of her family farm, a breast cancer scare, and an alcoholic husband. Dewey won her heart, and the hearts of the staff, by pulling himself up and hobbling on frostbitten feet to nudge each of them in a gesture of thanks and love. For the next nineteen years, he never stopped charming the people of Spencer with his enthusiasm, warmth, humility, (for a cat) and, above all, his sixth sense about who needed him most.
As his fame grew from town to town, then state to state, and finally, amazingly, worldwide, Dewey became more than just a friend; he became a source of pride for an extraordinary Heartland farming town pulling its way slowly back from the greatest crisis in its long history. | | | Features: | |

Another victory for cat loversJul 26, 2010 I love all animals especially cats, wolves and owls. This was a wonderfully warm and touching story of a loving relationship that might never had been. If "Dewey" had not been found and adopted, one wonders how different the lives of those he touched might have been. And this book brings that story to a huge audience for sharing with a world filled with lovers of cats and books and children.
heartwarming storyJul 23, 2010 This story is a great read for anyone of any age. It is especially touching if you are an animal lover like me. It is moving all the way through and Dewey absolutely captures your heart.
Good light readJul 22, 2010 Little bit redundant and predictable, but a nice light read that won't do you any harm and makes you feel good. Don't know if it will inspire me to visit the town - I grew up outside of a similar town, and this sounds similar.
Great book!!!Jul 20, 2010 For all you cat lovers and animal lovers out there! A fun and touching book about a unique cat and his affect on so many lives!

Beautiful StoryJul 16, 2010 This book is about an unwanted kitten dropped into a book return in winter and adopted first by the library and then by the world. It delves into how Dewey stayed despite petty politics, cat haters and allergies. It was heart rending to read about an elderly Dewey deemed not attractive enough to represent the town or library any longer and the decision to fight back.
This book pierced my soul because it spoke about what my elderly cat is going though right now. He is also hyperthyroid, skinny (once big/strong) despite the medication and tons of calories given to him though every type of soft and hard cat food to get him to eat more. His once gorgeous striped Maine Coon fur is thinning and he cannot take care of it so it must be brushed/combed daily. An elderly Dewey speaks for ALL the elderly dogs and cats and other pets out there and their struggles and the struggles of their owners. Dewey opened my eyes to pay more attention to my elderly cat because he won't be around much longer.
