Cat: Keeping Peace When You Have More Than One Cat | | | | | | | Description: | | In this companion to her successful introduction to cat behavior Think Like a Cat, Pam Johnson-Bennett, the award-winning author and feline behaviorist, shows how adding another cat to your home does not have to be the start of a kitty apocalypse. Although cats are often misunderstood as natural loners, Johnson-Bennett shows how to plan, set up, and maintain a home environment that will help multiple cats—and their owners—live in peace. Cat vs. Cat will help readers understand the importance of territory, the specialized communication cats use to establish relationships and hierarchies, and how to interpret the so-called "bad behavior" that leads so many owners to needless frustration. Offering a wealth of information on how to diffuse tension, prevent squabbles and ambushes, blend two families, or help the elder kitty in your family, Cat vs. Cat is a welcome resource for both seasoned and prospective guardians of cat families large and small. | | | Features: | |

Cats 101Jun 23, 2010 This author has written so many books about cats, definitely a real authority. Her ideas worked for us and our three cats are getting along much better. There are times when they forget their manners but more and more they're more enjoyable to be around. Subjects are covered that we never considered. She's thorough and we're glad we bought the book.

She knows her cats! (although a bit tedious)May 17, 2010 It does take some commitment to read the entire book but TRUST ME, it is worth it! I had a single cat for 2 years and decided to get him a companion. Also be sure to pick out the right cat for your cat, mine is more dominant and a male and I have been told to get a male cat for another male cat. The new cat is more submissive and easy going. So that was helpful too.
Initially the older one (Snowy) would make all sorts of evil noises at the slightest whiff of Odie, I was really worried Odie would have to go back to the shelter. Well, I followed her advice (which in the book is very detailed and well specified) on keeping them separated, associating good experiences with each other, deconditioning and breaking the growling habit by making play sessions around the new cat's room, etc. It was a slow process that took me 1 month but it WORKED! Follow the advice religiously (however, it can be time consuming)! Gradually introduce them and give them lots of attention. The pureed chicken baby food also worked wonders as a special treat that really calmed down Snowy. At first he didn't seem to get the hint that good things happen around Odie, but it seemed to click after the baby food!
Snowy and Odie are great buddies now. They play every day, groom each other, and cuddle! I can't believe it actually worked, especially compared to the first week when Snowy looked like he was about to start WWIII.

excellent for new introductionsApr 16, 2010 I have a notoriously antisocial cat who only adores myself and a catsitter, and even with us she will swat if we cross her invisible line of 'too many pats'. SInce my boyfriend moved in, shes absolutely despised him, blocked hallways while glaring and hissing at him, and swatted at him. This book helped us understand so much about what she was going through, and what she felt she was lacking in terms of territory, and even an outlet for her energies or emotions! She's a bit more tolerable now, but where the book came in REALLY handy was when we decided to get a new kitten despite all the people saying she was a one-cat-household kind of girl (from vets to sitters to friends... they saw her behaviour and immediately assumed she just didnt want anyone around). We took it slow, followed the steps, and less than three weeks later my old cat and our new three month old kitten chase each other around the house playing games. She's more content, has an outlet, has certain areas everyone recognises are hers and hers alone and there is generally more peace overall. Life still isnt perfect, but without this book's suggestions we would never have gotten this close.
Great book for insight into how cats thinkMar 21, 2010 This is a terrific book that gives great insight into the thinking of cats and how they interact. It has been helpful for me.
